“In a way, I’m not the ordinary client. As a fitness professional myself, I know the difference between my adductors and abductors. I’m pretty motivated, and don’t need any convincing that fitness is an important component of healthy and productive life. So why do I go to trainer twice a week? The answer is this—Tim Barrett is not just any trainer. Tim knows things about fitness I didn’t even know existed, probably as a result of his voracious appetite for reading fitness and medical journals. (“Tim, how was your vacation? Great! I read some giant text book about the endocrine system on the plane ride!”) Tim cares deeply about my progress, and creates programs that actually result in progress. Over the three or so years I’ve trained with him, my strength and fitness level has increased exponentially, and I look and feel better than ever before. When I do show up with some ache or pain, Tim knows exactly how to modify the program to address it, and shows me corrective movements that seem to magically realign whatever is askew. Most importantly, Tim knows how to safely push me beyond what I think I can do, not by loudly cheering, but by quietly believing in my ability and strength often before I do. I am becoming a better athlete every day, thanks to my friend and trainer, Tim Barrett.” — A. Goldenberg
"I first met Tim in July of 2007. I had just moved to NYC and was early in my career as a personal trainer. I quickly identified him as the smartest, most fit trainer on staff. I remember asking him a question about training and by the time he was done answering me, I was overwhelmed at the knowledge he threw at me. In that moment, I had a glimpse at the quality of trainer that he was.
I knew I wanted to obtain and give that same level of quality and knowledge to my clients. As time went by, Tim was always the one I would go to with health and or fitness questions. He never failed to educate or point me to the right course or book that could teach me what I needed to learn. I have never met someone who has such an appetite for knowledge.
I have scoliosis and have dealt with back problems since I was 12. In 2011, I fractured my left PSIS. As a result, everything was hurting and exercise was becoming impossible. I started gaining weight and feeling hopeless. I decided I needed to hire Tim to do some one on one work with me. As I began working with Tim, I started to have hope.
Every time I met with him he had a new movement or progression of mobility, stability and strength that I had never thought of. Initially, I was only going to work with him short term. However, I ended up staying with him until I left NY in May of 2013. Every session I had with him was invaluable both personally and professionally. I was getting stronger and also learning something new about the science of movement and exercise. Tim has always been ahead of the time whether it's about intermittent fasting, the ketogenic diet, or down to the squatty potty! Haha! He always has personalized health advice no matter the angle you bring it to him. I left him at the age of 29 feeling great in my skin and pain free. I think of Tim almost daily when training my own clients. I'm always aspiring to be the teacher, trainer and friend he is to me." — Abigail Gibson
"I had the opportunity to work one-on-one with Tim back in 2014, and since then have always been impressed by his strategic thinking in developing programs that suit the health and fitness goals of individuals from all walks of life. When I first started working with Tim, my number one goal was to improve my overall strength, and Tim was exceptional in introducing me to a variety of tools to start me down that path. More importantly, Tim believed in my ability to handle weights that I would never have imagined touching, and offered a thoughtful approach and keen attention to detail in getting me through some of the most grueling workouts! Tim is extremely sharp, professional, and creative, and I would recommend his work to anyone that is looking for a superb personal trainer.” — H. Slater
"With so many new gyms, ’trainers,' and fitness programs out there, how do you choose a personal trainer to help you see results, reach your goals, and not injure yourself in the process!? Sure they need a national certification, maybe even have a specialization, and word of mouth by a friend (who may or may not know that much about fitness).
I am a World Natural Bodybuilding Federation Bikini Pro Athlete and I can not recommend Tim more highly enough. He helped me develop and perfect my technique and form, and was a constant source of knowledge and inspiration along my journey. There are coaches who are good at what they do, and then there are the Pro’s, like Tim. Tim is one of New York City’s best. He is perfect for anyone who values knowledge within one’s field, impeccable technique, and a good ole fashion personal connection while embarking on a challenging fitness goal." — Angelina Leis
"When I first started working with Tim, I was looking to become stronger and more proficient in kettlebells. Tim was definitely the right trainer for me. Our sessions are physically challenging, efficient and fun. I feel fortunate to have found a trainer who has a strong understanding of the mechanics of the body movements, and shares his passion and knowledge throughout every session." R. Hale
"I met Tim in the summer of 2007. He was one of the first trainers I met in New York City. I wanted to get acquainted with kettle bell workouts and get my butt kicked. Tim's well crafted coaching ignites a sense of focus that any athlete will recognize to push them to their "A game."
Tim recommended a couple of books on kettlebell training and introduced me to Pavel Tsatsouline. I started calling him "Comrade." As a way to get to know the city, I signed up for an obstacle race called Urbanathlon and started to train and run outdoors. I told Tim about this race and described all the grueling obstacles that tested your endurance, strength, mobility and mental toughness and with a shrug Tim says "yeah I'll do that with you." Tim placed in the top three of his division!
His athleticism and "battle ready" persona is inspiration enough for anyone to feel ignited to improve yourself mentally and physically.
My "fitfam" consists of people that I've met over the years who have gotten me through various stages of my life through fitness. Tim has influenced me not only in my training style but also in life philosophies. As iron sharpens iron, Tim is definitely one to have on your side." — Carmel A. Navarrete
